Breaking: the Labour Party

The Labour Party’s MEPs Alex Agius Saliba and Daniel Attard have abstained from voting for the European Parliament President earlier today. They made this decision against the directive of their leader and Prime Minister to vote in her favour. The other Labour Party MEP, Thomas Bajada, voted in favour.

Alex Agius Saliba had recently made a statement saying that he would never do anything against the interest of his “leaders”. He’s actually doing just that by steering the Labour Party into the hands of Joseph Muscat and away from his current leader.

There is nothing principled or meaningful in the actions of Alex Agius Saliba.ย ย Alex Agius Saliba’s theatre in the European Parliament is intended for the Labour voters. There is no reasonable or valid reason to oppose the vote for Roberta Metsola, especially if you are Maltese. Her statutre and position in Europe is one of the things that today gives us soft power and even greater status in the international field. Refusing to vote in her favour as a Maltese is not an act of heroism and defiance, it’s an act of selfish and self-interested betrayal.

That’s exactly what Alex Agius Saliba is doing. He is projecting his opposition to Roberta Metsola to local Labour Party voters so as to remain the “authentic” Labourite, and the one who publicly wants to rehabilitate Joseph Muscat. This has got nothing to do with European politics. You are watching Joseph Muscat taking over the Labour Party in real time and a weak Prime Minister who can not resist him.

Ok tantrum complete. Give him his grapewater now. Who’s the other one who voted against or abstained? Never heard of him before the elections. Grow up and for once decouple state and party.

All true and what is even truer is that this will all backfire in the faces of Alex Saliba and anyone else who wants to rehabilitate Joseph Muscat. Muscat will never, I repeat NEVER be rehabilitated. He will keep losing support, even from die-hard Labourites.

  5. […] Basically, Thomas Bajada is in a very interesting situation. He is following the party’s line by dissociating from Joseph Muscat and taking a cooperative approach towards the Maltese President of the European Parliament, yet, his position is in a minority in terms of Labour Party votes compared considering his two other colleagues have opposing positions.
