Donald Trump non-committal over defending Taiwan

In an interview with Bloomberg journalist Nancy Cook, US presidential candidate Donald Trump did not give a commitment to defend Taiwan in case it is invaded by China. The current United States administration has an unambiguous commitment to defend Taiwan in case it is invaded by China.

In the interview Trump added that Taiwan should pay for US defense saying that Taiwan had stolen the chip business from the United States. China is currently threatening Taiwan with grey-zone tactics as Xi Jinping insists that China’s reunification with Taiwan is inevitable.

In reality, there is no firm stance by the United States to come to Taiwan’s defence in case of a war. Joe Biden has said there is such a commitment a number of times but his aides quickly dialled that down. The United States does not officially recognise Taiwan as an independent country and its official stance is one of ambiguity. It wants to keep the status quo; basically, keep Taiwan humming along as a successful and democratic business destination while dissuading China from invading it. The United States would be loathe to have to come to Taiwan’s military defence (particularly after its retreat from the world following forever and disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and its reticence to put all its military weight behind Ukraine).

Joe Biden’s approach to the world has been very similar to Donald Trump’s. It is a bit warmer to allies and less bellicose towards its adversaries, but, in many ways, it is the same. It withdrew from Afghanistan (disastrously) even though it could have held the country while spilling very little blood and money. It refused to strongly support Ukraine (boots on the ground and a no-fly zone would have been the true game changers) and, even in business, it has spent millions in subsidies to ‘bring back manufacturing jobs back to the United States’, forcing companies like the Taiwanese company Foxconn to build factories in America.

One of the reasons Joe Biden might lose to Donald Trump is that, if you are going to vote for protectionist politics, you might as well vote for the man who is all out for protectionism and has been preaching it for decades than the man who discovered it after Donald Trump made it popular.
