The latest discussion working conditions and wages of food delivery drivers that was stirred by the strike of some drivers should be anchored on the fundamental issue of the minimum wage and not about irregularities and illegal working practices – those should be clamped down by default by functional authorities without much need for discussion, pressure, strikes and whatnot.
Raising the minimum wage would cut out bad practices in the first place given that most of these practices are facilitated by a minimum wage that is already very low. The current minimum wage in Malta stands at ย5.35 per hour with a total of around ย777 per month. Rent for an apartment in Malta starts at around ย50 per day with rooms going for ย500 per month.
