Raise the minimum wage to address precarious-work conditions

The latest discussion working conditions and wages of food delivery drivers that was stirred by the strike of some drivers should be anchored on the fundamental issue of the minimum wage and not about irregularities and illegal working practices – those should be clamped down by default by functional authorities without much need for discussion, pressure, strikes and whatnot.

Raising the minimum wage would cut out bad practices in the first place given that most of these practices are facilitated by a minimum wage that is already very low. The current minimum wage in Malta stands at ย€5.35 per hour with a total of around ย€777 per month. Rent for an apartment in Malta starts at around ย€50 per day with rooms going for ย€500 per month.

    These words are out of touch with reality. People, including Maltese, are already being forced to work for less than the minimum wage in a “take it or leave it” scenario. Some have been forced into wage cuts – they are told that if they don’t accept “plenty of Indians are queuing up to take your job”. This is passed through the books by understating the hours worked.

    The current minimum weekly wage (2024) is EUR 213.54 for a 40 hour week. This is what will be declared on the pay-slip. However the workers are made to work hours in excess of the declared hours without additional pay, effectively extra daily hours or an additional day, leaving them working for below the minimum pay. This is not ‘Bolt drivers’, but office and shop workers.
