Wagner Leader who succeeded Yevgeny Prigozhin, Anton Elizarov, aka “Lotus” reported dead with Tuareg attack

The leader of the Wagner Group who succeeded Yevgeny Prigozhin, Anton Elizarov, aka “Lotus”, is reported to have been killed in the Tuareg attack in Mali. Late last week, Tuareg rebels liquidated a Wagner Group convoy near the Algerian border. Anton Elizarov lead the destruction of the town of Soledar in Ukraine as part of the Battle of Bakhmut.

The Wagner Group is involved in various semi-clandestine economic activities in Africa including gold mining and weapons sales. The Wagner Group is in Mali on the government’s invitation after it requested the withdrawal of French troops and United Nations peacekeepers. The government is fighting a rebellion against Tuareg rebels in the south of the country. The Malian government is a military dictatorship run by the army that took power with a coup d’etat in 2021.
