Wagner Group leaves Mali

The Russian military unit, the Wagner Group, has declared it is leaving Mali after “accomplishing its mission”. The Wagner Group arrived in Mali in December 2021 to help the Malian government fight Tuareg and Azawad Berber militant groups that are fighting for independence.

The Wagner Group in Mali suffered a serious of blows last year by the Tuareg rebels, but it suffered its biggest blow when its leader and his convoy of troops was ambushed and eliminated in the desert.

The Wagner Group has been responsible for multiple atrocities and human rights violations in Mali included a series of extra0judicial massacres of civilians including the Moura Massacre in 2022. Tuareg rebels in Mali are also vowing to support their Tuareg compatriots in Libya if necessary.

The Wagner Group still operates in Libya and also used to operate in Sudan, backing the Rapid Support Forces, however Russia eventually switched sides in the war in Sudan.
