European Commissioner President, Ursula von der Leyen, and High Representative, Kaja Kallas, issued brief statements in support of the International Criminal Court following sanctions against it by the US government. The US Department of State has issued sanctions against four ICC judges who were involved in investigating Israel’s war crimes in Gaza.
The ICC has a pending arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his previous Minister of Defence, Yoav Gallant. The US government has vowed to clamp down with sanctions against the ICC for issuing the arrest warrants against the Israeli Premier and his ex-Minister of Defence and against anyone who tries to execute it. The Presidency of the Assembly of the Court, which also represents the parties to the Rome Statute, has rejected these measures and reiterated its support for the Court.
This is just another one of the series of sanctions being targeted by the US government against the International Criminal Court. Previously, the US President issued an executive order sanctio0ning anyone that funds the ICC. The executive order also followed a bill in Congress that was passed in June last year allowing sanctions against the ICC.
