Remembering Karl Muscat: one of Malta’s top Prosecutors against organised crime

Two years ago, Prosecutor Karl Muscat was found dead at his home. He was one of the most skilled and zealous prosecutors against organised crime. He was even a strike-breaker to ensure that a Prosecutor was present for the most important ongoing cases by the Attorney-General. He was prosecuting Christian Borg and his gang for kidnapping and intended to prosecute him for money-laundering too.

For his zeal, passion and success at work, Karl Muscat was suspended indefinitely from his workplace over a contravention. He wasn’t given a psychological support and suffered from depression after having been abandoned by his superiors. Attorney-General Victoria Buttigieg didn’t even commemorate his memory or his legacy. For her, his death was as if nothing had happened.

Organised crime is much better off without Karl Muscat, and since his passing, the Office of the Attorney General hasn’t received a replacement of his stature. There seems, so far to have been, according to the investigations, no conspiracies behind his death, but his cold rejection was indeed, willing and calculated. The presence of individuals like Karl Muscat in the Justice system is a dangerous threat to any form of organised crime even if it is extended in the political sphere. Removing him from the scene gives corrupt individuals like Victoria Buttigieg a better peace of mind.

He would have lived if we had a system that supports and incentivises individuals like him. Instead, our system incentivizes and rewards the same individuals he used to prosecute.

Just asking, why was he suspended by Victoria Buttigieg? Was he in the know of something that could have created a storm within the Labour cabal?

  2. Was his suspension decided by a court or by the same accuser who acts as prosecutor, judge and jury?

If you are competent and not corrupt you have no future working for this government. They have zero respect for proper people and the fact this death was not properly investigated sums up the society we live in

  4. I always thought there was something funny with his death, he was very nice man, karma is a bitch and will get them one day.
