Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro banned WhatsApp in the country following continued protests against his rule after having lost the presidential elections. The winning candidate, Edmundo González is appealing to the police and the armed forced to support the people’s plight for democracy and regime change.
WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, is very popular communications application worldwide with an estimated 2 billion users. In non-Western countries, WhatsApp is often the preferred communications tool by many protesters given the application is owned by a US company and their government does not have direct access to its communications. It was recently banned in Bangladesh during the national protests.
