Preserving the Devil’s Pact with Joseph Muscat

Many interesting things are happening within the Labour Party right now and many dynamic changes that were in the offing for years, are unfolding right now in a short space of time. This is typical history as things that remained static for a long time start changing in a short space of time.

In my article here, I argued that if Alex Agius Saliba comes back to Malta for a local political role, he will start losing support for various reasons, but especially for the fact that Alex Agius Saliba will have his stupidity exposed through local action.

However, Alex Agius Saliba is already losing support within Labour and this is because he is now being considered as the favorite candidate of Robert Abela to clinch the Deputy-Leadership of the Labour Party. When Robert Abela met with Alex Agius Saliba and then told the Executive Committee to make changes to the statute to enable Alex to contest the election, there he sealed his official association and support of Alex Agius Saliba.

Robert Abela is not stupid, but he is not as sophisticated to make a trade that gives off different results from what it seems and is supposed to be giving. Robert Abela is not supporting Alex Agius Saliba so that Alex may lose support by associating with him. Abela is simply supporting Alex Agius Saliba to put a lid on the current divisions in the Labour Party, appease Joseph Muscat and preserve the Devil’s Pact. This is going to be a very damaging gamble for Labour in the next general elections because Alex Agius Saliba will further alienate more non-Labour Party members with his association and support for Joseph Muscat.

    If the current LP delegates really have the interests of the party at heart they will vote against the amendement to the statute which will once more allow current mps to contest for the post of deputy leader party affairs. I was one of those delegates that originally voted for the statute to be amended not to permit elected members of parliament to occupy such post. Dom Mintoff was correct to insist for this amendment and with reason. When the statute was amended once more under JM, to pave the way for Konrad to take over this role,the party delegates lost any influence or control they had over the LP. For one Konrad Mizzi had never militated or worked within the party structures. He was never a LP loyalist just like other opportunists that flocked to the labour fold prior to 2013. If the party delegates accept to amend the staute again to accomodate AAS they will not only be accepting another JM crony but also paving the way for some Nazz opportunist that gets elected to parliament on the LP ticket to contest and take over such a strategic role(remember Castaldi Paris, Deborah Schembri etc..). Morerover the LP statute is not a roll of toilet paper that is conveniently shaped every now and then to accomodate particular arseholes.

      Highly unlikely given that a sizeable majority of delegates barely have a brain to think with beyond what they assume to serve their own purpose.
