Pressure mounts to keep Daniel Meli in Malta

Franco Debono is taking a break from defending scum to putting his skills and profession to better use by addressing a more dignified case. Daniel Meli is an alleged Maltese cyber-criminal who is about to be extradited to the United States for his involvement in an international scam. His previous lawyer, Joe Giglio, botched the case by submitting his client’s admission of guilt and agreement to be extradited to the United States.

Upon realising that he could face up to 45 years in prison, Daniel Meli had cold feet about extradition to the United States. Now, Franco Debono has taken over Daniel Meli’s case is vigorously fighting for him to remain in Malta. Franco Debono is also lobbying Byron Camilleri to introduce an amendment in law to allow suspects to appeal their agreement to be extradited, so as to give Daniel Meli another chance.

Daniel Meli committed a stupid crime but the US Justice system will have no mercy on him and his stupidity may well cost him in excess of what he deserves. This will be out of the Maltese state’s control.

I would also like to appeal the government to keep Daniel Meli, and the extradition request with the United States Federal government can be negotiated given our good relationships. Daniel Meli is not a priority for the US government, however the Maltese state is obliged to look after its own, and this responsibility is exceptionally big considering that we are a very small people.

If we had a normal and competent state, Daniel Meli would have been caught by our own national security services and dealt by them accordingly. At an earlier stage, individuals like Daniel Meli would be on a recruitment list of the intelligence services as the services constantly search for the brightest minds to join their ranks.

Instead, we have a joke of a state, a circus for a government, and some of our brightest children are sick in the head with no one to take care of them.

  1. […] A Maltese citizen suffering from mental health problems may be lost forever for a stupid mistake he may have made. This is one of those times when one’s socialist background, religious sense of forgiveness and empathy may be triggered. After all, the Labour Party has been reserving these feelings for its worst criminals, so for once, it may be a good idea to apply these characteristics and values where it actually mattered. […]

  2. Mr Meli is extremely bright and deserves much better.
My thoughts are exactly the same.
Please keep chasing this by the hour, Mark Camilleri.
    Minister for Justice should intervene.

  3. Mr Meli is extremely bright and deserves much better. Beleive it or not, he is overall of a very good character and this was a young man’s stunt to defy boredom.

I agree with you on this, word for word.
Please keep chasing this hour for hour, Mark Camilleri.

This is either stark incompetence or diplomatic gifting.

The minister of Justice should intervene.

  4. Are they sure this young man does not have Aspergers Syndrome (now classified as Autism)? Both the facial features and the cyber activity are highly indicative.

You’re turning a criminal into some kind of victim and software genius. You have no clue and no empathy towards the real victims who had their lives turned upside down through the stealing their electronic data, accounts, and money. Shame on you and your ilk. Will you be campaigning for Malta to look after its own when the FBI, hopefully, comes after Konrad Mizzi?

    1. “Pegasus is the hacking software ? or spyware ? that is developed, marketed and licensed to governments around the world by the Israeli company NSO Group. It has the capability to infect billions of phones running either iOS or Android operating systems.” He didn’t actually “go steal peoples money” as you seem to think.

It has been used by many governments, including Malta.

  6. […] Daniel Meli left a long internet footprint of his illegal activity before getting caught by the FBI, having exposed himself at an early stage. […]

  7. […] Daniel Meli has a long history of mental health issues documented by the National Health Service, but so far, not a single politician who has used mental health issues for their own political gain has stepped forward to advocate for Daniel Meli to stay home. […]

  8. […] be applied retroactively on those currently expecting to be extradited, and therefore it will give Daniel Meli a chance to challenge his extradition. Daniel Meli was expected to be extradited to faces charges […]
