Following yesterday’s administrative elections at the Labour Party’s General Conference, Prime Minister Robert Abela is set to announce a cabinet reshuffle which would see Alex Agius Saliba leave his seat at the European Parliament and return to Malta to be appointed as an MP in Malta’s Parliament.
Ian Borg was elected as Deputy-Leader and by default will serve as Deputy-Prime Minister for Parliamentary Affairs (he is replacing Chris Fearne). Alex Agius Saliba will be the Deputy-Party leader for party affairs replacing Daniel Micallef.
Alex Sciberras beat Norma Saliba in the race for the Presidency of the executive.
I’m skeptical that these changes will alter anything in Labour, aside from increasing Joseph Muscat’s influence. Ian Borg and Alex Sciberras, who belong to neither Robert Abela’s nor Muscat’s faction, will wield little influence in the current climate. They may serve only to present a more mature facade for a crumbling, self-destructive criminal organisation, but they will hold little real power and almost none in steering Labour away from its path of self-immolation.
The new Labour Party executive is composed as thus:
Alex Sciberras: President
Louis Gatt: Vice-President
John Grech: International Secretary
William Louis: Secretary
Members of the Executive:
Mariella Abela
Ray Azzopardi
George Azzopardi
Guza Cassar
Rosette Cassar
Matthew Chetcuti
Yana Debono Grech
Ray Falzon
Jason Farrugia
Eman Felice
Owen Grech
Jason Micallef
