Fano separatist militants have launched what seems to be a successful attack on Ethiopia’s second largest city, Gondar in the north of the country. Gondar is home to approximately 400,000 residents. Conflicting reports state that Fano militants have already taken over the city but this has not been confirmed by the official authorities yet. This attack came after several victories by Fano militants against the Ethiopian National Defence Force.
Fano militants from the Amhara region in the north of the country have been fighting the Ethiopian National Defence Force since April last year after they refused to be integrated with the ENDF. Their insurgency this year has coincided with the arrival of Egyptian officers in Somalia as Egypt and Ethiopia clash over the Grand Renaissance Dam.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia and Somalia (back by Egypt) are also maneuvering against each other along their borders.
