   That the Ukrainian president has to beg for weaponry in this manner so far into this war, and after having shown incredible resilience and innovation on the battlefield, is pathetic. At least a president Donald Trump would say either that he prefers a ceasefire (codeword for ‘Russian appeasement’) or that he thinks the European Union should shoulder the majority of the burden to arm Ukraine (not an entirely unreasonable proposal).

   On the other hand, the Biden administration seems intent on claiming that it wants Ukraine to win the war and pretending that what it is doing is enough for that aim to be reached, even though it clearly is not. Meanwhile, the European Union is all too happy to take the United States’ cue and use the excuse of supposed incoming aid from America to pretend it does not have to give more military and financial aid of its own, leaving Ukraine in this extended torture scenario of having enough armaments to survive but nowhere near enough to achieve real ‘victories’.

   At this point, the Trump/Vance stance seems more honest and intelligent. At least, there is a clear end goal: either to end the war or to force the European Union to step up and deal with it. The Biden/Harris stance seems to be ‘gaslighting’.

   As a final point, we can compare the war in Ukraine/Russia with the war in Gaza/Israel. Arms sent to Ukraine by the United States come in small numbers and with all sorts of restrictions about how and where they should be used, despite Ukraine running short on artillery and having caused negligible harm to Russian civilians and infrastructure. Bombs sent to Israel to be dropped on Gaza come in great quantity and with virtually no restrictions, despite Israel having demolished the entirety of Gaza and killed far more civilians than fighters. If Israel’s “right to self-defence” extends so widely, why doesn’t Ukraine’s?

   If the United States were truly honest, it would say that it does not care that much about Ukraine because it is not in its strategic interest to do so. Or it would say that it is scared of Russia in a way it is not scared of Hamas. These would be ugly truths to hear, but they still would provide more clarity than the constant ‘gaslighting’.
