Judge for yourselves if this statement sent by the Minister of Culture Owen Bonnici should qualify as a right of reply for the publication of his image inaugurating a public latrine.
No pun is intended in saying that this is the government literally writing its own satire, yet, beneath its passive-aggressive facade lies a strong undercurrent of frustration directed at the press, screaming for it to shut up.
Last Sunday happened to be “Jum Marsaxlokk” and a number of events took place organised by the Local Council and the Marsaxlokk Parish.ย Minister Owen Bonnici – as the Minister responsible for Local Councils – along with the Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Local Councils Alison Zerafa Civelli attended all the events.ย Other politicians from both sides of the political spectrum attended some or all of the events as well.
The events included a mass celebrated by the Marsaxlokk Parish for the occasion, a visit to a public convenience block which was constructed following funds obtained from the Directorate for Local Government (which falls under the responsibility of Bonnici and Zerafa Civelli), and a ceremony during which a number of Marsaxlokk residents were given recognition by the Local Council for the services provided to the locality.ย Minister Bonnici and Zerafa Civelli both spoke during the ceremony.
No press releases or press calls were issued by the Ministry whatsoever.
