Mandadotary collective bargaining is not a right according to the European Court of Human Rights

More about the Labour government’s intention to introduce mandatory unionisation for third-country nationals and low-paid jobs.

The European Court of Human Rights already issued a sentence decreeing that mandatory unionisation is not a right, and you can read the sentence here in a case brought up by the UK’s largest trade union against the government when it tried to impose mandatory unionisation for agricultural workers. The European Union’s guidelines for trade union laws may be found here.

The Labour government’s measure is mainly intended to augment the numbers of its ally, the General Workers’ Union which is the main trade union for low-paid workers. If the government actually wanted to help these workers it could easily increase the minimum wage into a decent living wage.

  1. Wouldn’t mandatory unionization give more rights than just a decent living wage?

    1. Obviously, it would not.

Quite to the contrary, it would. Unionized workers especially unskilled workers have better wage and working conditions than non-unionized workers and access to redress for their grievances through collective bargaining agreements. That’s not even up for discussion. I’m surprised you think otherwise.

  2. Well said Mark! When the government descriinated against workers, no union was there to protect their rights as individuals, unions fo not care about individuals right to justice for example! The Ombudsman on the other hand ruled that discrimination had taken place but the government persists, to this day, to deny justice!

To hear that a particular union official later got a government job says it all. Ditto with the PSC. Indipendent from government my foot! Ditto the ES of the PSC who was appointed Permanent Secretary with OPM!

  3. […] Note, that this is the same government that pretends to supports workers’ rights and wants to introduce mandatory unionisation. […]
