In a very closely contested referendum on European Union membership, the Moldovan people voted yes with a slim majority of 50.6% defeating the “No” campaign which was backed and financed by the Russian government.
Moldova’s President Maia Sandu, who campaigned for the “Yes” vote, announced that her government uncovered a vote-buying scheme where Russia tried to purchase up to 300,000 votes for the “No” campaign.
In addition to the positive EU referendum result, the incumbent President won the majority of votes in the Presidential election, securing up to 40.8%, but will face a run-off against her pro-Russian opponent, Alexandr Stoianoglo, in the upcoming election.
