Georgia heads to the polls next Saturday to elect a new government

The country of Georgia is heading to the polls next Saturday to elect a new government which will decide on whether Georgia keeps its close relationship with Russia or move closer to Europe with the end goal of joining the European Union.

Thousands of demonstrators filled the capital Tbilisi of Georgia last weekend with the President Salome Zourabichvili joining the demonstrators to support the pro-EU message and campaign. She also made a supportive statement to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky saying that Ukraine’s and Georgia’s struggle to join the European Union was a common goal of both countries.

Georgia’s current Prime Minister is Irakli Garibashvili of the Georgian Dream Party that sought close relations with Russia and even introduced authoritarian laws similar to recently passed Russian laws. The European Union suspended Georgia’s pending EU application as a result.

The current government is being challenged by an opposition coalition called United National Movement which was originally in power in 2003 after the Rose Revolution, and is being led by Tina Bokuchava, Mikhail Saakashvili, Nika Gvaramia and Mamuka Khazaradze.
