A heartfelt tribute to Saint Sebastian took place in Narbonne, France, this past weekend as a delegation from the Soċjetà Filarmonika Pinto Banda San Sebastjan of Qormi, Malta’s oldest cultural institution, travelled to honour their patron saint. Rooted in tradition, the residents of Qormi maintain a unique devotion to Saint Sebastian, who was born in Narbonne. His legacy lives on, with references to the French city visible throughout Qormi in street names and songs.
The Maltese delegation was warmly welcomed by Narbonne officials, including Deputy Mayor Claude Lebessou, who oversees religious relations. On Saturday, 26th October, the delegation led a colourful parade through the historic city center, featuring traditional costumes, banners, and music, drawing nearly 200 spectators. “There was a palpable sense of fervor among the visitors–not just religious, but also a genuine appreciation for Narbonne’s hospitality,” noted Lebessou.
While the delegation’s visit carried a reverent, almost pilgrimage-like atmosphere, officials emphasized its significance as a celebration of heritage and historical ties. For Narbonne residents, it served as a reminder of Saint Sebastian’s origins in their city, as well as his story as a Roman soldier who defended Christians and was ultimately martyred. Legend has it that Narbonne’s Saint-Sebastian Church stands on the very site of his birthplace and holds his relics.
The visit symbolized a deepening bond between Qormi and Narbonne, with plans for future cultural exchanges already in discussion.
