Syrians protest repatriation plans of new Dutch government

Yesterday, Syrians living in the Netherlands have gathered in The Hague to protest the new government’s plans to repatriate them back to Syria.

The new Dutch government, elected on anti-immigrant campaign, plans to repatriate Syrians as it is considering to declare parts of the country as safe.

Returning to Syria for many Syrian immigrants is not a safe option the government of Bashar Al-Assad views many Syrian immigrants with great suspicion. Many of the immigrants have fled persecution and lost their homes to government supporters. The Assad government has also gifted many Syrian houses to Iranian and Arab Shia migrants from foreign countries.

Legal scholars argue that for a country to be designated as “safe,” all its territories must be considered safe, rather than dividing it into safe and unsafe areas.
