Halloween also marks the day Satoshi Nakamoto published one of the most revolutionary papers in modern finance: the Bitcoin white paper, titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. The bitcoin white paper was uploaded to a cryptography mailing list on the website metzdowd.com on October 31, 2008.
The white paper proposed a decentralised monetary system using cryptographic technology, building on a concept similar to Adam Back’s Hashcash system. It outlined a network of distributed servers using timestamps on blocks to record transactions, with a peer-to-peer mechanism called “proof-of-work” verifying each transaction. In this system, miners would verify transactions and receive bitcoin as a reward for their computational efforts. Interestingly, the term “blockchain” was not originally used in the white paper, even as the fundamental principles of blockchain technology were established
Bitcoin was released by Satoshi Nakomoto on January 9th 2009 and commemorated the event with a hidden inscription in the first bitcoin block that read:
“The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.”
The market captialisation of bitcoin stands above $1.4 trillion as of writing.
