Russia and its allies rush to recognise the illegitimate government of Georgia

Russia and its allies were quick to recognise the illegitimate government of Georgia, which retained power despite losing the election. So far, the countries that recognise the illegitimate ruling-government are Russia, Hungary, Venezuela, China, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Armenia and the United Araba Emirates.

In Europe, the rhetoric surrounding Georgia appears to comrpomise with the official narrative of the ruling regime, and there have been no decisions or calls from the EU to withhold recognition of the current illegitimate government. The EU Commission issued a report on the EU’s enlargement process and candidates members and called for Georgia to introduce electoral reforms to address shortcomings. The EU High Representative Josep Borrell called for an investigation on the election.

The Georgian prosecutor requested that the President of Georgia provide evidence of election fraud, but President Salome Zourabichvili, the country’s most prominent figure opposing the current government, declared that this is not the role of the President.
