Citizens of the Untied States will go to the polls later on today to elect their new president a position that is being contested by Democratic Party nominee Vice-President Kamala Harris and Republican Party nominee Donald Trump. Up to 65 million citizens have already voted in early voting exercises with some states such as Georgia marking a record turnout. Some polls show that Kamala Harris is leading with early voters.
Polls in the United States are mixed showing no decisive winner in what is considered to be a very hotly contested election. Donald Trump, previous President and also a convicted felon, is campaigning on a pledge to bring U.S. factories back to American soil through import tariffs. During his last presidency, Trump made a similar promise concerning China, but Chinese exports to the United States actually increased significantly during his term. He is once again campaigning to lower energy tariffs which he actually did during his term as President by allowing more leeway in drilling regulations and issuing more permits. On the other hand, Donald Trump will also appease Vladimir Putin and withdraw his support for Ukraine, and is also threatening to withdraw from NATO: this will give Russia and China more global reach and influence in the world.
According to a YouGov poll, Europeans are hoping for a Kamala Harris victory, as she has pledged to continue working with America’s European allies on global security. Kamala Harris, who is currently serving as Vice-President, has pledged to help citizens with direct subsidies including for first-home buyers. She has also pledged to increase tax credits for families and parents, reduce taxes for working-class citizens, and also promised to legalise marijuana. Another major proposal by Kamala Harris is to introduce price caps on medicines (particularly insulin) and even food products.
Women are more highly likely to come out and vote for Kamala Harris as Republicans have been campaigning to ban abortion on a federal level, while Trump has been rallying his supporters with promises that he will reduce illegal immigration.
Citizens of the United States will be heading to the polls later on today.
