International human rights organsiations such as Amnesty International have confirmed that the name of the Iranian woman who took off her clothes in protest at the Islamic Azad University in Tehran is Ahoo Daryaei. Amnesty International has called for her immediate release. She was forcefully escorted into a unmarked car by religious police following her protest.
A spokesperson for the university claimed that Ahoo Daryaei, a mother of two, was suffering from mental stress and disorders and was susbequently taken to a mental hospital. In Iran, women who break religious clothing rules are often categorised as having mental health disorders and are incarcerated in mental health facilities. Iranian women have been consistently resisting the Islamic regime’s control over their lives by refusing to adhere to the religious clothing laws and regulations.
In 2022, there were mass protests and riots in Iran following the murder of Mahsa Amini by the Iranian police, who was arrested for refusing to wear a hijab, and was subsequently brutalised and killed at a police station.
