Following Donald Trump’s election victory in the United States, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for closer cooperation among European states on security and defense against the Russian threat to Europe, adding that he is working with French President Emmanuel Macron toward this goal. Yesterday, the German cabinet approved a law aimed at reintroduction National Service for men with the aim of bolstering the German military from 180,000 troops to up to 400,000 troops.
French President Emmanuel Macron echoed Olaf Scholz’s words and said: “I have just spoken with the Chancellor Olaf Scholz. We will work towards a more united, stronger, more sovereign Europe in this new context. By cooperating with the United States of America and defending our interests and our values.”ย
Meanwhile, Poland and the Baltic states are currently fortifying their border with Russia with trenches and other defense infrastructure. Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk released a photo of these construction works on X.com (Twitter) days before the US presidential election.
Donald Trump has pledged to halt all military aid to Ukraine if elected US President, a move which will strengthen Russia’s war against Ukraine and its resolve to keep expanding its influence and control over its neighbours.
