French President Emmanuel Macron made strong statements at the European Political Community meeting in Budapest yesterday, calling on European heads of government to strengthen Europe and abandon their naivety.
President Macron wants Europe to strengthen its defenses and increase its strategic autonomy but is also insisting with European leaders not to be complacent with Russia’s disinformation wars against Europe. President Macron made the allusion to Europe being a herbivore surrounded by carnivores.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was also present at the summit, where he met with several European leaders individually to discuss military aid for Ukraine
The European Political Community is a distinct entity proposed by France and established following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Its aim is to bring together European states, including those that are not EU members, to discuss European security and other strategic issues such as energy and food security. Russia and Belarus were barred from joining the EPC.
Prime Minister Robert Abela and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also attended the summit.
