Malta women in formidable UEFA Nations League group

Malta’s national women’s team has been drawn against Georgia, Cyprus, and Andorra in Group C2 for the upcoming UEFA Women’s Nations League, promising a series of exciting matchups ahead. The draw took place on Thursday, November 7, 2024, in Nyon, Switzerland.

This second edition of the UEFA Women’s Nations League will see Malta looking to build on their recent experiences and push for a promotion to League B. Under the leadership of Coach Manuela Tesse, Malta topped their League C group in the tournament’s first edition, earning promotion and gaining invaluable experience in the UEFA Women’s European Championship qualifiers against high-profile teams like Portugal, Northern Ireland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Head Coach Manuela Tesse expressed optimism about the draw, stating, “We’re excited to face Georgia, Cyprus, and Andorra in Group C2. It’s a balanced group and a great opportunity for us to show how much we’ve improved. Every game will be a challenge, but we’re confident in our team’s ability to compete and earn strong results. We’ll work hard to make Malta proud.”

Newly expanded UEFA Nations League

The UEFA Women’s Nations League will feature 53 teams, organized into three leagues: two with 16 teams and one with 21 teams. This league phase will determine four finalists, along with the teams set for promotion or relegation, leading up to the European Qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The league stage begins with its first two matchdays scheduled from February 19 to February 26, 2025. The promotion and relegation play-offs, as well as the semi-finals, will take place from October 22 to October 28, 2025, with the final and third-place matches set for November 26 to December 2, 2025.

League Stage:

  • Matchdays 1 & 2: February 19-26, 2025
  • Matchdays 3 & 4: April 2-8, 2025
  • Matchdays 5 & 6: May 28 – June 3, 2025

Finals:

  • Draw: June 6, 2025, Nyon (exact date TBC)
  • Semi-finals (two legs): October 22-28, 2025
  • Final/Third-place play-off (two legs): November 26 – December 2, 2025
