In a major step against organised crime, the Malta Police have successfully conducted a drug bust at Malta Freeport, leading to the arrest of four men and the seizure of 146 kilograms of suspected cocaine, intended for the local market.
The operation unfolded on Tuesday at 1:40 pm, during routine inspections conducted by Malta Police with support from Freeport security officials. Officers flagged a trailer exiting the Freeport as part of an ongoing investigation into drug importation. Inside the trailer’s cab, behind the driver and a passenger, police found 105 kilograms of suspected cocaine. A further search in a container at the Freeport revealed an additional 41 kilograms, bringing the total seized to 146 kilograms–an estimated street value of โฌ20 million.
The drugs, originating from the Port of Guayaquil in Ecuador, were reportedly intended for distribution in Malta. In addition to the trailer’s driver and passenger, both haulers, two Freeport employees were also taken into custody.
The four Maltese men arrested are aged 44 (from Birลผebbuฤกa), 46 (from Fgura), 36 (from ฤฆaลผ-ลปebbuฤก), and 41 (from ฤฆaลผ-ลปabbar).
An inquiry, led by Magistrate Ian Farrugia, is underway, while police investigations continue.
