Vote of confidence in German Coalition Government for the 16th December: elections for the 23rd February

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced he will propose a vote of confidence in the coalition government next 11th December which would be taken on the 16th of the same month. He is set to lose the vote and head for elections on the 23rd February of next year. Germany’s economy is shrinking as it wades into a recession with struggling exports and a disrupted energy framework that has kept electricity prices higher than pre-Covid pandemic levels. Germany has shut down its nuclear reactors, turned to coal, and its renewable energy grid is not producing its full potential.

German Finance Miniser Christian Wolfgang Lindner from the liberal FDP challenged Chancellor Scholz’s Budget recommendations to widen fiscal constraints and increase spending as he prioritised increased defence and infrastructural spending. The German government coalition, dubbed as the traffic light coalition for its composition has been shaky as it navigated many disputed including on Ukraine, energy and lately the federal budget.

The German government coalition is composed of the social-democrats, the greens and the liberals, all of which are losing votes the far-right AFD.
