The Republican-led Senate will need to confirm two unorthodox nominations: former Democratic Congresswoman from Hawaii Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence and Matt Gaetz as Attorney General. The Republicans hold a narrow majority in the Senate, with 54 seats to the Democrats’ 47.
As Democrat Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard denied that Bashar al-Assad did war crimes and condemned the US intervention in Northern Syria which is aimed at aiding the Kurdish regional government to maintain security against ISIS, and on the Iraqi border. Bashar Al-Assad killed up to 500,000 people in a brutal civil war to maintain his power and displaced millions of people, apart from using chemical weapons on civilians. Gabbard has also supported appeasement with Vladimir Putin and an end to military aid to Ukraine.

The US has regularly targeted Iranian proxy militias in the area who also target US bases in the area.
In October 2023, Matt Gaetz forced the Republican House Speaker to resign by invoking a rarely used procedure called a “motion to vacate,” which allows members of Congress to call for a vote of confidence in the Speaker. This was the first time in history that the procedure was successfully used.
