Yorgen Fenech may be released from jail if not tried by next June

Yorgen Fenech, currently awaiting trial on charges of commissioning the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, may be freed from jail if his trial does not begin by next June. The journalist’s son, Matthew Caruana Galizia, who now heads a foundation in her name, stated that unnecessary court delays are holding up the start of the trial.

The compilation of evidence against Yorgen Fenech is still ongoing, with court expert Martin Bajada delaying the submission of documents. The customary period that suspects spend behind bars before trial is around 30 months, but Fenech has been held longer due to extensive delays, which have been further prolonged by interference tactics from his own legal teams.

Yorgen Fenech is expected to be tried by jury for murder.
