Opposition leader Bernard Grech took to Facebook to voice strong criticism of the government, highlighting what he described as ongoing scandals and widespread corruption that place an undue financial burden on taxpayers. Grech accused the Prime Minister Robert Abela of inaction and making excuses instead of tackling these issues head-on.
In his post, Bernard Grech urged the public to join a protest organised by the Nationalist Party, set to take place on Monday 18th November at 6 pm in front of Parliament.
The protest aims to hold the government accountable and demand immediate action against alleged corruption and misconduct.
In an interview on Kuntatt on NET FM, hours after announcing the protest on Facebook, Grech called on people to unite against corruption within the government. He particularly criticised Ministers Clayton Bartolo and Clint Camilleri, close allies of Abela, over allegations of misconduct and misuse of public funds. Grech stated that mere apologies from these ministers are insufficient, calling such statements a “mockery” to the public, noting that accountability should mean real consequences.
Grech explained that, despite hopes for change after last June’s election results, the government remains entrenched in a mindset of impunity, disregarding calls for ethical behaviour. According to Grech, Abela has proven himself to be weak, lacking both ideas and authority, ultimately reliant on the Nationalist Party to address pressing national issues.
Addressing recent controversies, Grech pointed to a reported โฌ70,000 public-funded promotion awarded to Bartolo’s girlfriend, claiming that when public backlash arose, Bartolo and Camilleri coordinated to create a fictitious consultancy role, adding insult to injury by placing an unqualified person in a high-paying position. Grech argued that these actions reflect a pattern of self-serving decisions at the expense of public welfare and taxpayers’ money.
Bernard Grech’s message was clear: Maltese and Gozitans must take a stand this Monday, sending a message to Abela and his administration that they will no longer tolerate public funds being used for personal gain.
He reiterated demands for the resignation of Bartolo and Camilleri, calling for all funds lost through fraud to be repaid and for Abela to be held accountable for the actions of his government.
