Moroccan-Dutch Minister Nora Achahbar resigns following racist remarks by government colleagues

The Dutch Minister for Benefits of Customs Nora Achahbar resigned following racist remarks by government colleagues. Nora Achahbar is of Moroccan origin and also held a high rank in her party, the New Social Contract Party, as its s which sits in a government coalition with three other right-wing political parties. Following the Dutch elections of 2023, right-wing political parties formed a coalition government, with Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) leading the polls with up to 29% of the vote.

Following the riots instigated in Amsterdam by Israeli Maccabi Tel Aviv fans which targeted Dutch citizens, Arabs and residents’ private property, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof made various comments against Moroccan residents accusing them of antisemitism. Israel conducted an online disinformation campaign victimising its football hooligans after their riot was overpowered by Moroccan residents in Amsterdam. The Dutch cabinet also discussed the possibility to deport Moroccans involved in the riots as it gave the impression that it was following advice from the Israeli government.

The Dutch Minister Nora Achahbar resigned with a letter stating that she joined the cabinet with the aim to make a difference and restore justice following the child social benefits scandal that brought down the previous government. However, she continued by saying that she can not continue this task due to the poalrising atmosphere of last weeks that is impeding her from doing her job.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof responded to her resignation letter saying it is not true there is any racism in the government and the government will strive to be a government for all the people and against discrimination and antisemitism.
