Yesterday, protestors in the Russian-occupied Georgian region of Abkkhazia stormed the regional parliament building in Sokhumi and called on President Aslan Bzhania and his government to resign. President Bzhania fled to a Russian military base with his government colleagues.
Protesters broke into the parliament building and are still occupying it at the time of writing. The protests were triggered by a government proposal for a law that would allow Russian companies and individuals to purchase land in the region.
Abkhazia, along with the region of South Ossetia, was occupied by Russia in an invasion of Georgia in 2008. The occupied region of Abkhazia is entrenched in the Russian economic and political sphere and remains isolated from the Western world. It survives on Russian subsidies but has been facing economic hardship and shortages of food and supplies since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
