Exclusive: Three Gozitan clubs expected to apply for MFA status

The Maltese Herald can exclusively reveal that three Gozitan clubs, Nadur Youngsters and to a lesser extent Kercem Ajax are expected to apply for MFA status. Nadur and Xewkija are almost 100% certain to apply next year whilst Kercem are still debating their decision.

The first Gozitan club to apply for MFA status, Victoria Hotspurs have so far had quite a good season. Although they are completing in the lowest tier of Maltese football, the Amateur League 2, they have romped away with the league, winning their opening six games for a perfect record.

Sources within the Gozitan football community who spoke exclusively to the Maltese Herald on condition of anonymity explained that the Victoria Hotspurs decision has galvanized other clubs to take the plunge. Many observers see no future in the Gozitan league where honours are limited and possible European experience only comes in the form of the Regions Cup.

Benefits for Gozitan clubs in applying with the MFA

Sources have explained that there are several benefits for Gozitan clubs when applying with the MFA. Amongst these are the ones below.

  • Participation in National Competitions: MFA membership could potentially open doors for the club to participate in Malta’s national football competitions, and even the domestic leagues, alongside Maltese clubs.
  • Access to Funding and Resources: Membership would make the club eligible for funding, grants, and infrastructural support from the MFA, as well as from UEFA and FIFA development programs.
  • Player Development Opportunities: It would also offer greater exposure for its players, coaches, and staff, enabling them to compete at a higher level and potentially attract attention from bigger clubs and scouts.

Match fixing in Gozo

Nadur Youngsters are currently embroiled in a controversy regarding a match fixing incident although they are the aggrieved party in proceedings. Qala Saints, the current leaders of the Gozo Football League First Division are being accused of trying to bribe a Nadur Youngsters player to throw a match through intermediaries.

The same sources told this news portal that Nadur and Xewkija are expected to make their application some time next year. Kercem are still at an exploratory stage although they could also join forces with the other two clubs in the future
