The incoming EU High Representative Kaja Kallas has met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris ahead of the Weimar Triangle+ Meeting to be held this week. The tripartite forum of France, Germany and Poland will meet on November 19th to discuss updates on Ukraine. Ukraine will be represented by Foreign Affairs Minister Andriy Sybiha and EU Vice-President Kaja Kallas will also be present.
The meeting projects an alignment between Vice-President Kallas and President Macron over foreign policy that contrasts with the position of the German government that seeks to end the current war in Ukraine with Russian appeasement. France is currently helping Ukraine forming its MIG fighting brigade, and President Macron is pressuring US President Joe Biden to release permission for the use of long-range weapons by Ukraine into Russia before his term ends.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke for two hours on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week. Scholz didn’t give details of his conversation with Putin other than reiterating that any peace agreement should involve Ukraine. Lithuania Foreign Affairs Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis hoped that such form of appeasement will no longer be continued. Chancellor Scholz also reiterated his position in the German Bundestag that he is against allowing Ukraine to use long-range weapons on Russian territory.
With incoming U.S. President Donald Trump preparing to abandon Ukraine by pushing it to cede land for peace, French President Emmanuel Macron is being seen as the last remaining state leader capable of representing and speaking for the free world in international forums.
