The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) contingent with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) returned home today as their deployment term came to an end. AFM personnel have the opportunity to voluntarily apply for deployment with UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, an initiative coordinated with their Irish partners since 2007.
The AFM contingents operate in Camp Shamrock along with the Irish peacekeepers. The Camp was cauight in the middle of clashes between the IDF and Hezbollah in the early days of Israel’s invasion of Lebanon. The IDF has also deliberately targeted various UNIFIL installations as they pressured UNIFIL to withdraw from their bases.
UN peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon primarily focus on civilian infrastructure projects and have also provided protection for humanitarian aid convoys during the ongoing war in Lebanon.
