Malta has its final Nations League Group D2 clash against Andorra this evening. Interim head coach Davide Mazzotta and forward Jurgen Degabriele addressed the media with a blend of determination and optimism, despite recent challenges. Coach Mazzotta acknowledged the disappointment of Saturday’s result (Moldova beat Andorra with a 94th minute goal confirming first place in the group) but highlighted the team’s unity and resolve to end the campaign positively.
“We are a bit sad after Saturday’s result, but the group is in harmony,” Mazzotta said. “The dream is lost, but our aim is to finish the group with nine points, equal to Moldova.”
Malta squad ready to face Andorra
Mazzotta expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness and commitment, preparing to counter Andorra’s aggressive playstyle. “Andorra are aggressive and have nothing to lose. They aim to disrupt your rhythm, make you look bad, and steal possession,” he explained. “We need to stay focused, move quickly, and stick to our game plan. We know our strengths and our desire to score.”
While addressing Malta’s ongoing challenge with converting chances, Mazzotta remained optimistic. “Scoring isn’t just about us; it’s influenced by our opponents too. Like any team, we face challenges, but we have strategies yet to be fully executed. These take time to become second nature.”
The coach was also pleased to confirm the availability of a full squad for the match.
Degabriele opens up on mental challenges
Forward Jurgen Degabriele shared his coach’s determination to end the campaign on a strong note. “This is a national team game, and like every match, we want to win and finish with nine points,” he said, acknowledging the disappointment of missing out due to the direct encounter rule.
Degabriele also opened up about his personal journey, reflecting on the mental challenges he faced over the past year and a half. “All the frustration came out when I celebrated my first goal,” he revealed.
Looking ahead, Degabriele emphasized his ambition to make a meaningful impact for the team. “I can’t control the coach’s decisions, only my actions. I want to play and will give my all to succeed,” he stated.
Malta will face Andorra at the National Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 20:45.
