Man arrested with suspected cocaine, heroin and cannabis after traffic stop

A 22-year-old male from Valletta has been arrested after police found suspected cocaine, heroin and cannabis in his possession following a traffic stop in Triq Giuseppe Garibaldi, Paola.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when officers noticed a vehicle reversing into the entrance of a field upon seeing them. The police immediately approached the car, where the driver admitted that he did not have a valid driver’s license.

A search of the vehicle revealed two packages containing suspected cannabis and an amount of money.  The situation escalated when the police prepared to search the man himself.

He reached into his trousers and pulled out two bags, which he flung into a nearby reservoir.  The officers retrieved the bags immediately, finding them to contain a number of packets of white and brown substances suspected to be cocaine and heroin, respectively.

The suspect was arrested and is being held in custody at the Floriana police lock-up.  He is expected to appear in court today, Tuesday morning, at 11:30am before Magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace.

Authorities are still investigating the case.
