I asked the Deputy-Prime Minister if Labour MPs were plotting against the Prime Minister: this was his answer

Following the story by The Maltese Herald on the Labour Party rebellion, I posed questions to the Deputy-Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs on this subject and these were his answers.

Note, that he did not ask permission or “clearance” to provide these answers, neither where they sent in advance, nor did we ask permission to publish the final text.

I didn’t expect a different answer from him, but it is also good to put it on record. It’s not as if any Deputy-Prime Minister would admit in public of having leadership ambitions. The last question may also be more interesting.

Are you part of a Labour Party rebellion that intends to change its leader?ย

The stories about a Labour Party rebellion planning to oust Prime Minister Robert Abela are pure science fiction. He holds a strong position within the Party, despite the fact that rumors like these have been circulating for quite some time. I become Deputy-Party Leader to help Labour win the next general elections and Prime Minister Robert Abela has my full support.

Some Labour MPs are reportedly suspicious of you due to your ambiguous stance on Joseph Muscat’s faction within the Labour Party. There are also rumours that Joseph Muscat will inevitably welcome Robert Abela’s replacement with yourself. Is it true that they expect you to treat Joseph Muscat more favourably than Robert Abela has?

This is false, and the accusation is simply an attempt to attack me. Joseph Muscat’s faction has never approached me for concessions or favors for themselves or Joseph Muscat. My sole focus remains on supporting the Prime Minister to secure victory in the next elections.
