The European People’s Party (EPP) concluded it’s two-day Political Assembly in Malta, hosted by the Nationalist Party (PN), coinciding with an important moment for the European Union as the new European Commission is set to be voted on in Strasbourg.
EPP President Manfred Weber stated that this meeting was crucial for shaping the party’s five-year strategy. He praised PN Leader Bernard Grech for strengthening the PN and positioning it as Malta’s alternative government, highlighting Grech’s influence on a European level. Bernard Grech, in turn, emphasised that hosting this assembly was an honour for both himself and the PN. He highlighted its success in bringing the EPP family to Malta for discussions on internal matters and broader policy issues.
Key discussions focused on the importance of Mediterranean policy and improving European citizens’ quality of life. Plans to appoint the first European Commissioner for the Mediterranean were finalised, with Dubravka Šuica of Croatia, who was also present at the assembly, likely to take the role. Grech also initiated discussions on transportation, healthcare, and infrastructure, seeking EU support for Malta’s challenges in improving the quality of life for Maltese citizens.
The assembly included several meetings and talks with leaders like former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and a visit to the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, together with the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.
The Political Assembly concluded with unanimous approval of a policy roadmap to guide the EPP over the next five years.
