Updated: German Foreign Ministry contradicts Statement by the Chancellery on ICC’s arrest warrant against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Updated. In a separate statement, the German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that the judiciary is independent from the government and the German government is obliged to uphold its international agreements. She continued by saying that the German government is examining the arrest warrants before implementing them.

In a brief statement, the German government said that it won’t be abiding with the arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his previous ex-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. It said it has a historic responsibility over Israel and nothing would happen to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he travel to Germany.

The statement can be read here.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his previous Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have been issued arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court for their war crimes in Gaza. They are being accused of deliberately killing civilians and systematically causing a humanitarian crisis.

Germany is a party to the Rome Statue and is therefore obliged to uphold arrest warrants by the ICC.

Unless my automatic translation of it has produced a different translation to yours, the statement says nothing of the kind. It says it will consider it when and if the occasion arises. But if I’d just taken your word for it and not read the statement myself I wouldn’t have known. So the question that arises is, is this an oversight or a deliberate mischaracterisation? If the latter, why should anything else this website prints be taken seriously? Very disappointing.
