Sources at the Foreign desk have confirmed to The Maltese Herald that Malta will uphold the ICC’s arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister. However, Malta will refrain from issuing a formal statement for now. The matter will be discussed at the EU Council, and the government intends to align its position with the Council’s conclusions.
Malta is a party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, as are all EU member states. So far, Hungary and Estonia are the only EU member-statees to condemn the arrest warrant, while others, including the Netherlands and France, have stated they will uphold the ICC’s decision.
The EU Council meeting on this issue is scheduled for next week.
