The government cabinet of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to boycott Haaretz, Israel’s longest-running newspaper. Founded in 1918, Haaretz is now the most popular liberal-leaning newspaper in Israel. It is also well-known internationally and is one of the few successful online media outlets with a large global subscriber base.
The government’s decision means that Haaretz will no longer receive government advertisements or funding. However, this is unlikely to have a significant impact on its operations, as Haaretz relies more on its subscribers than on government revenue.
Haaretz was the first Israeli newspaper to come out in support of Al-Jazeera after its offices were shut down in Israel and Occupied Palestine under a new law that bars international media outlets that are critical of the government.
Haaretz has also been a strong critic of the Israeli government’s war on Gaza and its occupation of the West Bank, frequently documenting the government’s actions and alleged crimes in Palestinian territories.
