Georgians clash with police in Tbilisi after the government says there will be no EU membership

Georgians in the capital Tbilisi clashed with the police for the first time after the incumbent and illegitimate government declared it won’t be pursuing European Membership. Protests have been ongoing during the week, and escalated following the announcement by the pro-Russian government.

A heavy police presence surrounded the Georgian parliament yesterday as riot police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators. The situation escalated as protesters mounted barricades to block the riot police from advancing. Widespread police violence was recorded, and numerous demonstrators were arrested.

The Georgian Dream ruling-party is now also facing a rebellion within the government as various high-profile individuals submit their resignation in protest. Those who resigned include Jeimuraz Janjalia, Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and a number of ambassadors and civil-servants.

The demonstrations that started yesterday seemed more intensive than the previous ones and opposition parties said that the protests will continue. The demonstrations continued during the night and are still ongoing right now.
