Protests in Tbilisi this weekend have kept escalating throughout Sunday as demonstrators kept setting up barricades and clashing with riot police in front of parliament. Images were reminiscent of Ukraine’s Maidan Revolution in 2014. However, moments ago, police successfully cleared the last remaining protesters, arresting and reportedly assaulting hundreds in the process.
Georgians are protesting against the pro-Russian Georgian Dream ruling-party which has held to power despite losing elections. The incumbent ruling-party prefers preserving good relationships with Russia instead of pursuing a pro-EU roadmap. The opposition protest movement has been holding regular weekend rallies for several months but has yet to achieve the critical mass in the streets needed to oust the incumbent ruling party.
Protests escalated and turned violent for the first time over the weekend, with demonstrations spreading beyond the capital city.
