The incumbent ruling-party PSD came first in the Romanian parliamentary elections with around 23% of the vote, and the far-right (Alliance for the Union of Romanians) came second with around 17% of the vote.
USR or Save Romania Union came fourth with around 11% of the vote. The party is lead by the winner of the Romanian presidential elections, Elena Lasconi. She will face-off far-right and pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu in a presidential run-off on the 8th of this month. The National Liberal Party came third with up to 14% of the vote.
The liberals and the social-democrats are set to support Elena Lasconi in the presidential run-off to prevent Russian influence from taking over Romania but the process in the formation of a governing coalition will be fraught with disagreements. The current Romanian government is composed of a coalition between the liberals and the social democrats.
The parliamentary elections in Romania took place in the backdrop of anti-Russian protests in Bucharest where demonstrators chanted “Putin keep your paws off Romania”.
