Far-right presidential contender Calin Georgescu came ahead of incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu in the Romanian presidential elections. The incumbent President Klaus Iohannis can not seek another term after having served two terms since 2014. Marcel Ciolacu is the leader of the Social-Democrats (PSD) and is in government in a coalition with the liberals.
Calin Georgescu with 22% of the votes is ahead of Premier Ciolacu with 21% of the vote. A runoff will take place on the 8th December between the main contenders.
Calin Georgescu is an independent Romanian politician and worked as an executive director with the United Nations. For his political campaign he used TikTok to run on a platform in favour of lower energy prices, farmers, and pensioners. He also attacked NATO’s stance on Russia, does not support arming Ukraine, and praised Romania’s past fascist leaders including Ion Antonescu.
