The Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was arrested earlier today after authorities discovered up to $10 million stashed in a safe at his bodyguard’s house. Among the incriminating materials found at the residence were flight tickets to Moscow. Călin Georgescu was set to face Elena Lasconi in a presidential run-off after he came first with 22% of the vote. The election was annulled after Georgescu was accused of having had his campaign funded by Russia. His popularity has increased since then.
After being arrested, Călin Georgescu was taken to the office of the Prosecutor’s General for questioning. The case of Russian interference in the Romanian election appears to be more serious than previously thought, with the Prosecutor’s Office possessing incriminating evidence against Georgescu, including wiretaps revealing his contacts with Russian officials such as Colonel Evgheni Ignatiev, the deputy military attaché at the Russian Embassy in Bucharest.
The case also involves an investigation over a large number of fake TikTok accounts promoting Georgescu’s political campaign that are suspected of being created by Russian disinformation networks. TikTok played a key role in boosting Georgescu’s visibility in the elections.
