Romania voted in favour of securing its future in the European Union after it overwhelmingly voted in favour of Nicusor Dan in the presidential elections. The mathematician and mayor of Bucharest won up to 53% of the vote against his opponent, who had previously won the first round, George Simion.
George Simion prematurely announced his election victory using the flag of Chad an emoji. He won up to 45% of the vote. The election was one of the most contested in Romanian history, with one of the highest turnout rates.
Elections in Romania were held again after the first round of the presidential race was cancelled, following charges against front-runner Calin Georgescu for receiving funding and support from the Russian state for his campaign. He was also in contact with Russian military officials.
Nicusor Dan now has the challenging task to nominate a Prime Minister from a very fragmented parliament.
