The Romanian Constitutional Court has abrogated the presidential elections results due to constitutional breaches by Russian interference on behalf of presidential candidate Calin Georgescu. The presidential run-off between Calin Georgescu and Elena Lasconi scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled and a new round of presidential elections with all the candidates will take place.
The Romanian intelligence service has gathered sufficient evidence for a constitutional case to prove their case of constitutional breaches due to Russian interference. The evidence includes an online campaign by Russian authorities that coordinated a propaganda campaign on behalf of Calin Georgescu and millions of Euros of undeclared donations to Georgescu’s political campaign by his pro-Russian backers. Calin Georgescu had repeatedly declared that he didn’t receive and spend any money for his political campaign except for the small donations he received by his supporters and volunteers.
This is probably the first time in history that an election was cancelled due to Russian interference. Russia is actively trying to influence elections in Eastern European states and elsewhere in order to increase its international political reach. Georgia and Moldova are the latest cases of states that had to grapple with Russian interference in their elections.
